Treating Your Hammertoes

How your podiatrist in Baltimore Metro Area can help your feet

Hammertoes can be difficult to deal with. They can make it hard to put on shoes, to stand, or walk. Hammertoes can keep you on the couch. The good news is, your podiatrist can help you deal with the pain of hammertoes. Dr. Edward Orman at Honeygo Podiatry in Perry Hall and Fallston, MD, and serving Baltimore Metro Area offers several effective treatments for hammertoes.

So, what is a hammertoe? A hammertoe typically occurs on your second, third, or fourth toe and affects the middle toe joint. The toe joint begins to bend inward, causing your toe to protrude outward. The toe eventually will resemble a hammer.

You can develop a hammertoe from wearing shoes that are too narrow, causing your toes to crush together, forcing the toe joint to bend unnaturally. High heels can add to the problem by pushing your toes forward. It’s no surprise that hammertoes occur more frequently in women.

You can do a lot to prevent hammertoes by wearing shoes that have a wide toe box with enough room for your toes to wiggle around. Shoes should never crowd or crush your toes together.

You can also help prevent hammertoes by manually stretching your toes and doing toe exercises like picking up objects from off of the floor with your toes.

If you do develop a hammertoe, remember to:

  • Switch to wider, more supportive shoes
  • Wear cushions or pads inside your shoes
  • Take over-the-counter pain and anti-inflammatory medication

Hammertoe pain can be a significant problem. Fortunately, your podiatrist offers permanent treatment options to get rid of hammertoes. Your podiatrist may recommend:

  • Custom-made orthotics or special footwear to correct a muscle and tendon imbalance
  • Toe splints and other devices to help realign your toe and toe joint
  • Corticosteroid injections around your toe joint
  • Surgical treatment to realign your foot and toe

Don’t let hammertoes keep you from doing the activities you love.
